QRZ Forums. Greetings All, I would like to get a couple of opinions on testing baluns. A quick Google search reveals several methods for testing however most involved either hooking up a rig to the balun and doing SWR tests or hooking the balun to a resistive load and applying some different voltages to the input and testing at different test points.
I am also interested in thoughts on analyzing the electrical properties of the balun. Any favorite links or references to more information on the subject would be great. The common use for this balun type is to convert unbalanced source usually the output of a tuner to a balanced transmission line feedline for a doublet or loop I feed a 57' vertical with one of these and ohm twinlead regularly anywhere from m.
Where you will have issue's is if you intend to use the feedline and balun to convert to 50ohm at a particular frequency and eliminate the tuner from the system, it's not really an issue per-say, just a fair amount of math to figure out the correct lengths, and hard numbers as to how the balun will work in this situation.
Last edited: Jun 29, I have a MFJ analyzer borrowed from another ham so I'm in luck there. What should I look for on the meter to verify proper operation? I have no doubts the design is solid, its just been a while since I built anything and I wanted to make sure I tested my implementation of the design. The direct short on the DVM was the primary thing that had me questioning my build. I have a tuner and plan on keeping it hooked up since the doublet I'm planning on building will not be extremely long Looks like I can go ahead and start cutting the runs for my doublet.
All I need now is for it to quit raining so I can put the thing up. Oh, thank you for the link, that looks like I'll have some good reads over the next couple of days. It should read about 50 ohms resistence, with a SWR - don't expect to be totally flat across the full 1.
Let us know the results. K9FVJun 29, Ok I rummaged around and came up with around ohms of resistance. When I hook up the analyzer, the impedance goes between 60 and 90 ohms and the SWR goes between 1. Seems like my tuner should be able to handle that, but I guess I'll have to wait until I have the doublet cut and the twinlead attached to see what it will really be. Thank You for the help, another handy little bit of info to have so I can pass it on.
Glad to help James, I've seen that balun and been thinking about building it myself. Good cheap design If you would, please enlighten us with a "better" design that I can build from parts that can be aquired from Lowes as thats the only place near my QTH to purchase supplies.
I am planning on building a doublet that will be approximately 66ft long, thats the most space I have on my lot. What would you recommend for a feed system for that antenna? I don't have hard lab measurement evidence as to wether it works or not, all I have is the same guys I gab with every day and night telling me consistantly that it works, and nobody can tell a differance between any of them I've used.

The balun I made was constructed in the Summer of and has been neatly hidden in my engineering notebook since.
Antennas are a fascinating aspect of radio and baluns are an integral part to most radio amateurs stations. The term balun " It's primary function is to prevent common-mode currents, while making the transition from an unbalanced transmission line to a balanced load such as an antenna" 1 One of my favorite wire antennas is the Off Center Fed Dipole OCFD really a doublet, good topic for another article for it's solid performance and useful operating characteristics.
My balun will be part of an OCFD I plan on having some K2GXT members help construct during the winter along our underground tunnel system as a neat, quick, and fun one meeting side-project. This project can be used for a variety of applications not pertaining to just OCFD's, another popular use is in converting coaxial cable into balanced feed line ohm.
If you have never built a balun before then this might be your invitation to do so. I first built one of these during a local club meeting back in Massachusetts with the Billerica Amateur Radio Society about five years ago.
All the transformer parts come in a kit, however you are given the freedom to make whatever style balun that may be of interest. One thing I would like to stress is that all metal hardware such as nuts, washers, and bolts are stainless steel in this project. Any metal hardware used on antennas should be stainless steel when possible because it will not corrode which helps keep a good electrical and mechanical connection for years. However, you cannot solder to stainless steel which demands other methods of joining the metal such as nuts and bolts.
Designing and Building the Balun. This kit includes the proper toroidal core, Everything you need to build the balun is included including instructions on winding the wire. The current balun I chose to build for my off center fed dipole is the HBM on pg. The largest enemy to toroids comes in the form of overheating which can crack them, rendering the balun useless.
Winding the Toroid. The most dreaded part about building a balun is winding the transformer. To be honest I used to avoid building an electronic circuit if it had a toroidal inductor in it that I had to wind, they scared me. It also wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't the only one to be intimidated, then again, I'm in for a surprise every now and then! There is a nifty trick to make winding toroids much easier. To count windings on the core you only count the windings that go through the centerit looks like a donut so in all reality it's not hard at all.
It is also a good idea to label the end of each wire with a small piece of tape or color marking for future reference. I attached small bits of masking tape with appropriate numbers shown in schematic on each wire-end once seperated into two wire-pairs with eight ends total.
The reader will see how this approach comes in handy further ahead in the article. The first step to constructing the transmission line transformer is to prepare the wire for winding. Take the magnet wire and slip the Teflon tubing over the entire length, both wire and tubing should be close in length, but may not be exact.
Once this is done fold the wire end-to-end and cut at the crease which is obviously the center of the wire. Pair both wires together evenly and secure with electrical or medical tape which also works good, the Teflon tubing is the dielectric, not the tape which is just securing the wires together.
Space the tape several inches down the entire length of wire. There should now be roughly six feet of paired Teflon covered wire-pair ready for winding on the toroidal core. The current balun uses two bifilar windings each containing eight turns.
A bifilar winding simply means that are two wires following each other.QRZ Forums. I'm home-brewing a receive only antenna using some parts I have on hand. I do not have room for a beverage. Again - this antenna will be used for receive only. I'm looking for feedback on this design using my existing parts as this is to be a cost-free project.
I do not want a directional design yet, such as flag or pennant so I'm not going to use a terminating resistor at first. I may terminate it later depending upon its performance. I could easily ground the shield as well. Then, it occurred to me that I've no idea which of these screw terminals on the W2AU baluns is which. I do not want to short the antenna to ground - only isolate the feedline. If I want to ground the shield, does it matter which terminal I use?

In any event, the matchbox is a tuner and all it does is make the transmitter believe it has an antenna with a lower SWR than it really has. This way it will introduce more power to the antenna than it can typically radiate. A random length antenna, one not tuned to any one frequency is a compromise antenna.
With watts of continuous key down CW it would heat up the core of the W2AU balun, at the feed point,and damage it, but that is the extreme example.
Many Hams understand this and do it anyway with care. Also, note that new solid state equipment further limits your operating options never contemplated over 50 years ago when these instructions were made. The equipment manufacturer dictates the parameters of your operating ability. It is suggested that if using ladderline, no balun, because a balun at the feedpoint, would interfere with the radiation that the offset antenna needs from the ladderline. Focusing only on current is a serious oversight that can result in defective system design.
Equal currents alone do not assure balance, just as SWR alone is not a confirmation of proper system operation. Properly working systems, both balanced and unbalanced, have exactly equal and opposite currents in each conductor. Balance and need for a balun is not caused by or cured by resonance or SWR. A good match does not mean good balance or lack of common mode, nor does a bad match mean the system will have common mode or balance issues.
Lack of resonance does not cause imbalance or common mode, and resonance does not prevent common mode or mitigate the need for a balun. The most common cause is improper treatment of balanced to unbalanced transitions, but common mode can come from many other causes. Low SWR means a balun or unun might be good.
Low SWR does not mean a system or device is good.
A balun or unun with low SWR over a very wide frequency range might not be a good balun or unun anywhere! As a matter of fact, a balun that isn't even a balun, one that always forces a system into severe common mode problems, can test perfectly on a simple SWR to load or SWR to antenna testing.
A balun can still make over-the-air contacts, even when non-functional as a balun. SWR, return loss, or input R and X with a floating resistor or antenna tell us one thing and only one thing. Floating fixed load tests only tell us input port impedance.
SWR with a floating load like a floating resistor provides no meaningful indication of balun function or effectiveness. A Guanella or current balun's functional quality can be evaluated by moving a ground common with signal source to points A, B, and C figure 1 while watching voltages or currents in the load, or even by watching input SWR. As a current balun becomes better, it will show less input SWR change as the test ground is moved between A, B, and C.
This is a very minimal test! It is the very least that should be done and still does not quantify the device for loss.
A reasonably good balun or unun will show nearly infinite input SWR when the load side is open or short circuited, and very low SWR when properly terminated. The open and short test, although crude, is important as a rough test. A good current balun will also show very little SWR change, as the ground wire is moved from test point to test point, when terminated in the test below.
It is notable that a good current or choke balun will function perfectly well as an unun or common mode isolation. An unun will normally not function as a balun, however. The sum of R1 and R2 are selected to equal system load impedance. The total resistance of R1 and R2 has to equal balun impedance, and R1 and R2 must be equal. This means if you test a 50 ohm balun, R1 and R2 are each 25 ohms.
Keep the leads all short! Note: A low loss network is always bilateral, it will have the same impedance ratio in either direction. Note this is NOT always true in lossy systems! Lossy systems are not necessarily bilateral. You'll see why this is important later. Note: A 50 ohm balun can be tested using a pair of ohm low-inductance resistors in place of the ohm resistors used in the test.
